Montmorency Falls: tips before you go

A visit to Montmorency Falls is easy to plan, but a few details make it better: how long to allow, what to wear for the spray and the wind, where to eat, and when to come.

The park covers the base of the falls, the cliff beside them and the grounds of the Manoir Montmorency at the top. Most of what you will want to see sits along the cable car, the suspension bridge, the staircase and a network of paths.

Below: how long to spend, what to wear, how wet you will get, food, the best time of year, crowds, the fireworks question and what to do nearby.

The quick answer

Allow two to three hours to see the whole site with the cable car, the bridge and the paths, or about 30 minutes for a quick walk to the bridge. Wear good shoes and layers, and bring a light waterproof: spray reaches the base and the lower viewpoints. Food is seasonal, with a terrace restaurant at the Manoir from mid-May to mid-October and snack bars from May to September. Late September to mid-October brings autumn colours; February and March bring the Sugar Loaf.

How long should I spend at Montmorency Falls?

About 30 minutes for a quick walk to the bridge, or two to three hours to ride the cable car, cross the bridge, walk the paths and come down the staircase.

Add time if you want the zipline, the via ferrata (about 2.5 hours in total) or lunch at the Manoir. Coach tours usually stop for around 45 minutes, which covers the base or the bridge but not much more. Groomed footpaths range from 0.5 to 3 km, so you can stretch the visit as far as you like.

Take as long as you like: the park's own ticket includes access and a round-trip cable car ride.

What should I wear to Montmorency Falls?

Good shoes for the 487 steps, layers, and a light waterproof or windbreaker; wind and mist make it feel colder than in town.

  • Shoes: closed, with grip, for wet wooden steps and paths.
  • Layers: the bridge over the crest can be very windy, even on a warm day.
  • A waterproof layer: for the spray at the base.
  • A cover for your camera or phone: a hood or a small bag keeps the lens dry.
  • In winter: dress for the cold, as you will be outdoors and near the ice.

Will I get wet at Montmorency Falls?

Possibly: spray from the plunge pool reaches the walkway at the base and the lower viewpoints, depending on the wind.

The top, the cable car and the paths away from the basin are drier. If you want to keep dry, see the falls from the top first and visit the base last. On a hot summer day, the mist is welcome. How the cable car and the stairs link the two levels is in the cable car guide.

Are there places to eat at Montmorency Falls?

Yes, seasonally: a terrace restaurant at the Manoir from 16 May to 12 October 2026, snack bars from May to September, a sandwich counter and a food truck.

  • La Terrasse du Manoir: the restaurant at the Manoir Montmorency, at lunch, from 16 May to 12 October 2026.

  • Summer: everything is open, including the staircase and, in 2026, the zipline from mid-May to mid-October.

Is Montmorency Falls crowded?

It can be: the park receives about 950,000 visitors a year, so expect company at the base and on the bridge, especially in summer.

Early morning and late afternoon are usually quieter than the middle of the day. On a coach tour your stop time is fixed; with a self-guided ticket or the shuttle you can pick a quieter hour and stay as long as you like.

Can you watch the fireworks at Montmorency Falls?

Not any more: the Grands Feux Loto-Québec moved from the falls in 2008 and are now fired from a barge on the St. Lawrence between Québec and Lévis.

The fireworks started at Parc de la Chute-Montmorency in 1995, and some websites still place them at the falls. The 2026 edition ran from 4 to 22 August, on the river. If you want fireworks, watch from the riverbanks in Québec City or Lévis rather than the park.

What is there to do around Montmorency Falls?

Île d'Orléans across the bridge to the east, the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré basilica about 22 km away, and Canyon Sainte-Anne, a 74 m waterfall with three suspension bridges.

  • In the park: the zipline (a 300 m double line), the via ferrata (age 12 and over) and, in winter, ice climbing.
  • Île d'Orléans: farms, orchards and villages; the 1935 bridge is still in use while a new one is built.
  • Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré: the basilica, visited by some 1.5 million pilgrims a year.
  • Canyon Sainte-Anne: 3 km of trails, open in 2026 from 7 May to 25 October.
