Montmorency Falls vs Niagara Falls

Montmorency Falls is often sold as taller than Niagara, and it is. It is not bigger, though, and the two make for very different visits.

At 83 m, Montmorency Falls drops about 30 m further than Niagara's Horseshoe Falls. But Niagara is a group of three waterfalls on the Canada-US border, far wider and carrying far more water.

Here is how the two compare on height, size, setting and season, what makes Montmorency special, whether it is worth the trip, and which one suits your plans.

The quick answer

Montmorency is taller: 83 m against about 51 m for Niagara's Horseshoe Falls, roughly 30 m more. Niagara is far wider and carries far more water, and it is three waterfalls on the Canada-US border rather than one. Montmorency is the easier visit: 15 to 20 minutes from Old Québec, a single park you can see in two or three hours, with an ice cone called the Sugar Loaf in winter.

What is the difference between Montmorency Falls and Niagara Falls?

Height against volume: Montmorency is about 30 m taller, while Niagara is far wider and carries far more water.

Montmorency is one main fall where the Montmorency River drops into the St. Lawrence, inside a park run by Sépaq. Niagara is a group of three waterfalls, the Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil Falls, with the Horseshoe Falls straddling the border between Ontario and New York. They suit different trips: Montmorency is a half-day outing from Québec City; Niagara is a destination in itself.

How do Montmorency and Niagara compare side by side?

Montmorency wins on height and on how close it is to a historic city; Niagara wins on width, volume and sheer scale.

Is Montmorency Falls taller than Niagara Falls?

Yes: at 83 m it is roughly 30 m taller than Niagara's Horseshoe Falls, which is about 51 m.

Québec City's tourism office and the city itself both put the difference at about 30 m. Sources vary by a few metres: the Canadian Encyclopedia gives 84 m and about 27 m. The park operator and the tourism office use 83 m, so that is the figure to go by.

Is Montmorency Falls bigger than Niagara?

No. It is taller, but Niagara is far wider and carries far more water, so Niagara is the bigger waterfall by any measure except height.

Calling Montmorency bigger than Niagara is a common mix-up. Standing at the base, Montmorency feels tall and narrow: a single white column against dark rock, with spray drifting over the walkway. The water often has a yellowish tint from the iron in the riverbed. Niagara is a wide curtain you see from a distance.

What is special about Montmorency Falls?

Its height, its closeness to Old Québec, a footbridge right over the crest, four centuries of history and a frozen Sugar Loaf in winter.

  • Height: 83 m, about 30 m more than Niagara's Horseshoe Falls.
  • Location: 15 to 20 minutes by car from Old Québec, with a city bus terminus a short walk from the upper entrance.
  • The bridge: a suspension footbridge crosses directly over the crest.
  • History: Champlain named the falls after Henri II, duc de Montmorency, in the early 1600s; British and French troops fought nearby on 31 July 1759; and in 1885 power from a generating station here lit Dufferin Terrace in Québec City.
  • Winter: frozen spray builds the Sugar Loaf, an ice cone at the base that is often 30 m tall or more.

What is Montmorency Falls like in winter?

Spectacular but partly closed: the Sugar Loaf ice cone forms at the base and ice climbers work the frozen cliffs, while the staircase shuts and the cable car has closure periods.

In the 19th century, people tobogganed down the Sugar Loaf. Today the ice is usually good for climbing from January into mid-March, and outside operators have run guided sessions in past winters. In 2026 to 2027 the cable car is closed from 2 November to 18 December and from 4 January to 5 February, then runs daily from 6 February. Details in the cable car guide.

Is Montmorency Falls worth visiting?

Yes, for most visitors to Québec City: it is close, it is impressive, and you can see the whole site in two or three hours.

Even if you have seen Niagara, Montmorency is a different experience: a compact park where you can stand at the foot of the falls, ride over the basin and cross directly above the crest within an hour. Plan around the seasons: the staircase is summer-only and the cable car has winter gaps. Practical advice is in the visit tips.
